Born and raised in North Carolina, the Tan and Sober Gentlemen began taking the songs, stories, and tunes that make up their beloved state’s musical tradition before they could talk. The music of the Carolinas, (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the American South before the Revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle. They play Irish tunes, ballads, and pub songs right next to the Appalachian fiddle tunes of their youth, melding the two into what they call “Irish-American hillbilly music.” Meanwhile, they have earned a reputation as one of the South’s hardest-hitting live acts, playing at blazing tempos, and putting every last bit of energy they possess into the show. The result is a raucous celebration of the Carolinas’ Irish heritage, with drinking, dancing, and merriment galore.

Triumph of Hope tells the powerful true stories of three Holocaust hidden children who survived against unimaginable odds, sharing their journeys of resilience, identity, and hope to ensure their voices and lessons endure for future generations.

Triumph of Hope is a powerful documentary that captures the resilience of the human spirit through the extraordinary stories of three Holocaust hidden children—Arye, Helga, and Regine—who later made their homes in the Roanoke Valley. Their journeys, marked by courage, endurance, and unwavering hope, serve as a testament to survival against unimaginable odds.

Through intimate interviews, each survivor reflects on their past in a deeply personal way—Arye, dedicated to preserving his culture and identity; Regine, embodying perseverance through acts of kindness; and Helga, demonstrating the transformative power of love and healing.

More than a historical account, Triumph of Hope is a reminder of the strength found in the face of darkness. The film weaves together compelling storytelling, evocative imagery, and historical context to not only educate audiences about the horrors of the Holocaust but also ensure that the voices of survivors—especially those from our own Roanoke community—continue to be heard.

As the number of living Holocaust survivors dwindles, this documentary serves as a lasting legacy—honoring the past, educating future generations, and inspiring a collective commitment to never let history repeat itself.

At the bottom of the Southwest Virginia foothills half-a-mile from the nearest neighbor, Colby Helms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father. He hunts and takes care of his mom. He also pens the kind of raw and real country music that cuts to the bone. At 12-years-old, Colby endured the loss of his dad due to cancer. Beset by sadness and loneliness, he turned to music. He taught himself guitar, banjo, and mandolin by watching local performers and YouTube videos. He amassed a growing record collection, combing through the stacks at flea markets and browsing eBay. Joined by his band The Virginia Creepers, he cut his teeth with countless gigs around the area.
